Berton "Wayne" Hinkel, age 88 of Waukesha, Wisconsin, formerly of Hollandale, died on Thursday, June 6, 2013 in Keystone, South Dakota while on vacation with his daughter and her husband. He was born on July 21, 1924 in Medford, Wisconsin, the son of Bert & Lillie (Spicer) Hinkel. He attended rural school near Medford, one year of high school in Medford, and then graduated from the Hollandale High School in 1942. Following graduation he entered the Air force where he was a radio operator on B-24 aircraft in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1945 he left the service and enrolled in the UW-Platteville where he attended until his graduation in 1948. Wayne was married on April 18, 1946 to Dorothy Massey, also of Hollandale. They had almost 54 years of a beautiful and loving married life. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Wayne taught school in the Mount Hope, Readstown, and Hollandale (from 1953 to 1962) school districts. In 1962 he went to the Saint Francis Public Schools where he served first as the high school guidance counselor and finally director of special education. In 1965 he received his Master's Degree from the UW Milwaukee. He and Dorothy spent their retirement years at their lake home on Porter's Lake in rural Wautoma, Wisconsin, and then moved to their retirement living complex in Waukesha in 1998. In recent years he was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Waukesha.
Wayne is survived by two children, Cynthia (Adrian) Orth of Waukesha; and Scott (Linde) Hinkel of Rochester, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Candice (Adam) Sullivan, Afton Orth, and Brian, Kevin, Jared and Kelsey Hinkel. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy who died on January 14, 2000; one brother Russell Hinkel who died in 1932; and a sister Geraldine Hinkel who died in 2008.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 12:00 PM at the Hollandale Lutheran Church in Hollandale. Rev. Mark Gruner of that church will officiate. Burial is in the Hollandale Lutheran Cemetery. Friends called at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Memorial services will be held on July 25, 2013 with visitation from 4:00 until 6:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at the Ascension Lutheran Church, 1415 Dopp St in Waukesha, WI.
