Gary Gruenenfelder Obituary

Gary J. Gruenenfelder, age 69 of Blanchardville, died from a tragic car accident on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. He was born to Henry and Margaret (Wahl) Gruenenfelder on April 3, 1954 at St. Claire Hospital in Monroe, WI. He grew up on the family farm in Blanchardville. He attended Blanchardville School graduating in 1972 in the newly formed Pecatonica School

district as their “first and finest” graduating class.  On May 31, 1975, Gary married the love of his life, Muriel (Murt) McCarville, of Hollandale at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hollandale, WI. He worked for Zim’s Cheese for four years, becoming a licensed Cheesemaker. Together, Gary and Murt rented two different farms in the area. In May of 1980, they bought the Eidsmoe farm just north of Blanchardville in Moscow township. Gary and Murt farmed together there until he built a new house on the edge of their farm where they still reside today. Gary started Gruenenfelder Construction, remodeling and building many new homes as well as the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Blanchardville. Eventually, he transitioned careers and began working at Intercon Construction in Madison, an underground utility company. Gary worked in the warehouse as the Shop Manager supplying tools and equipment to field employees across the nation. He later came home to help his son Farron, who bought their family farm. That same day, Gary and Murt bought a neighboring farm which they sold to their son Jason. Gary loved to operate field equipment on their family land.

He is survived by his lovely wife, Murt, six children and 19 grandchildren: Justin (Michele) Eva & Hawken Gruenenfelder of Monticello, Farron (Jess) Trinity, Aidan, Layton & Atley Gruenenfelder of Blanchardville, Lucas (Dana) Teagan & Aven Gruenenfelder of Hollandale, Heidi (Jason) Ella, Owen & Olivia Schrader of Pewaukee, Jason (Kris) Halle, Jaxon, Cal, Lydia & Cheyenne Gruenenfelder of Blanchardville, and Lacy (James) Ryder, Taylee & Ace Gilbertson of New Glarus. Gary is also survived by his siblings: Marilyn (Lee) Farhney, Anita Kammerer, Al Gruenenfelder, Tricia Hendrickson, Mark (Kelly) Gruenenfelder, and Ann (Denny) Marty. Denny (Jane) McCarville, Christine (John) Berthelsen, Mary Venden (Steve), Sue (Denny) Hammond, Mike (Barb) McCarville, Kate (Jeff) Hendrickson, Cyndi (Denny) Nafzger, Amy Sarbacker (Tim) and many nieces and nephews who he loved like children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, LaVerne McCarville, mother-in-law, Muriel McCarville, brother Paul, nephews Mike Gruenenfelder and Trevor Hendrickson and in-laws Carson Hegland, Rod Kammerer, Joan McCarville, Glady Gruenenfelder and Steve Venden.

Gary was a Pecatonica school board member for five years, serving as President, for one year.  He was a member of the Blanchardville Fire Dept for 24+ years, serving as Secretary/Treasurer and an EMT for many years. He served as the Historian of the Knights of Columbus for many years. Gary was a businessman at heart. In 2015, he started Quad County Rentals in which he bought the old Zim’s Cheese/Quad Co Coop feed mill and started a self-storage business. In 2018, he opened Gary’s Service Station in the previously closed Blanchardville Coop Oil Station. There, he provided much needed service for local community members.

Gary was dealt a couple of bad hands in his life. He faced prostate cancer in 2008, a grade 5 ruptured brain aneurysm in November 2010, a 2nd aneurysm (not ruptured) in February 2016, and ocular melanoma in August 2019. But like his mother, he was very determined (Murt said he was stubborn); he kept his chin up and had a very positive attitude throughout it all. With the help and prayers of all of his family and friends, he made a miraculous recovery and was back driving tractor and combine. Gary was able to meet the rest of his grandchildren and make so many more memories. He absolutely loved playing euchre, supporting his children and grandchildren, having a few drinks and visiting with family and friends. Gary was also known for his big smile, generosity, quick wit and humor. He will be deeply missed!
